(Hmnlct, I.iii.78-80)

Bacon states in another essay that "chiefly, the mold of a mans fortune is in his own hands,"" which is the same idea as Cassius' line in Julius Caesar: "Men at some time are masters of their fates" (I.ii.134). In his Sylva Sylvarum (1627), also known as Natural History, Bacon observes that "marigolds ... and indeed most flowers do open and spread their leaves abroad when the sun shineth ... and ... close them, or gather them inward ... towards night,""' just as the Author notices "the marigold, that goes to bed wi' th' sun,/and with him rises weeping" (The Winter's Tale, IV.iv.105-6). And so on. Many of the parallelisms are proverbial expressions, shared by most writers of the period, but three-fourths of the common sayings Bacon jotted down in his notebooks (152 out of 203) were quoted or alluded to in the Author's plays,'' an astonishing coincidence that, like Rutland's library, could be explained if the viscount were the Poet.
